Despite having to cope with several physical ailments, Mrs. B, 60, is still mentally sharp.
She suffers from multiple sclerosis and only has movement in her left arm. But one of her favorite pastimes is watching television from her wheelchair.
Her daughter lives in the same apartment but works during the day, so Mrs. B looks for ways to keep her mind occupied.
Gift certificates for food and medicine would help Mrs. B during the holidays. Her preferred pharmacy is Super D.
She lives on disability and social security. However, Madicare will not pay for items such as Carrington gel for her skin. Mrs. B needs the gel to keep her skin from developing sores.
Through Christmas for the Elderly, a joint project of the Southeast Missourian and Cape Girardeau County Health Department, such items could be donated by individuals, civic groups, churches and businesses to Mrs. B.
Mrs. B could use sweat shirts in size large or 16. She could also use sweaters in size large or an all-weather jacket in size 16. She has included pants with an elastic waist in size 16 on her wish list.
With the onset of perhaps a harsh winter, Mrs. B has included items such as white socks, warm gloves and a scarf on her list.
Mr. C must have kidney dialysis three times a week to cope with kidney failure. He lives alone in an apartment complex and must rely on a homemaker service once a week. Because he is disabled, his income is reduced to an amount that keeps him from purchasing items such as extra-large sweat pants, golf shirts, a lightweight jacket or pajamas.
He would also benefit from canned goods or gift certificates to grocery stores. He would appreciate a gift certificate for clothes from Wal-Mart.
Gifts may be delivered to the Southeast Missourian, 301 Broadway, or the Cape Girardeau County Health Department, 1121 Linden.
Gifts or money donations can be mailed to Christmas for the Elderly, P.O. Box 699, Cape Girardeau, Mo. 63702-0699. For more information call Kim McDowell at 335-6611.
