Cape code inspector receives certification
Steve Higgerson, a senior code inspector for the city of Cape Girardeau, recently received his certification as an electrical inspector. The International Association of Electrical Inspectors awards these certificates only to those individuals who have passed a written examination and completed certain continuing education requirements. Higgerson, who began as an engineering inspector in 1985, recently completed 20 years of service with the city. He is currently responsible for inspecting all electrical construction in industrial, commercial, and residential buildings.
Veterans home nurse wins award
Scott Whitsel, a registered nurse and supervisor at the Missouri Veterans Home, was chosen by his co-workers for the quarterly Leadership Award. Whitsel best demonstrated the principles of the Veterans Home "Achieve Global Training Program."
Chiropractor participates in milestone study
Dr. Scott Smith, a chiropractor in Cape Girardeau, recently participated in a milestone research project for the chiropractic profession. Smith was among approximately 10 percent of the nation's full-time licensed chiropractors who were randomly selected to represent the profession by providing information for a "survey of chiropractic practice."
Southeast professor wins teaching award
Dr. John Cherry, associate professor of marketing at Southeast Missouri State University, has been selected as one of the top three winners of the 2005 Hormel Meritorious Teaching Award. He also earned the Teaching Excellence Award.
Manpower exec top performer
Peggy Gates of Sikeston, major accounts executive for Manpower in Missouri, Kansas and Oklahoma, was recently named to Manpower's first-ever "Circle of Stars," a recognition that identifies top performers in sales and customer satisfaction ratings. Gates was ranked No. 2 in sales revenue in the United States.
Bank VP named to Presidents Club
Karen Rigdon, vice president and account executive, has once again been recognized by Bank of America in Cape Girardeau as one of the outstanding mortgage lenders in the Midwest. Rigdon was awarded with Presidents Club membership for being in the top 5 percent of lenders. Rigdon has been with Bank of America since 1997 and has more than 28 years of banking experience.
Commerce Bank selects employee of the year
Bonnie Pohlman has been chosen as Commerce Bank's 2004 employee of the year. The award is presented annually to an outstanding employee in the Cape Girardeau and Jackson area. Pohlman is a commercial loan assistant for the Cape Girardeau banking center at 160 S. Broadview St.
Corn grower from Delta wins honor
Jerry Cox of Delta earned third place in the AA ridge till non-irrigated category of the 2004 National Corn Yield Contest sponsored by the National Corn Growers Association. The award was announced at the 2005 Commodity Classic in Austin, Texas. Cox had a corn yield of 261.9059 bushels per acre.
Commerce Bank presents new achievement award
Janet Floyd has received the Commerce Bank President's Award for Excellence and Outstanding Achievement. The award, presented for the first time, was given to Floyd to recognize her leadership within Commerce Bank and dedication to superior service for customers in the Cape Girardeau community. Floyd joined Commerce Bank in February 1999 and is the branch manager at Cape Girardeau and group sales manager for the Southeast Missouri region.
Board of Realtors names award winners

Pharmaceutical rep given award

Interior designer named to preservation board
Dr. Mary Ann Kellerman of Cape Girardeau was recently appointed to the board of directors of the Missouri Alliance for Historic Preservation. The alliance promotes networking, education, recognition and advocacy of historic preservation issues. Kellerman is the owner of The Kelsen Design Group and has worked professionally as an interior designer since 1974.
Attorney completes mediation training
David Remley of The Remley Law Firm in Cape Girardeau recently completed Civil Mediator Training at the University of Missouri-Columbia School of Law, Center for the Study of Dispute Resolution. Remley is now listed by the Missouri Bar Association and the Federal Courts for the Eastern District of Missouri as an approved mediator.
Real estate agent wins award
Jane Clark, a sales associate with Century 21 Key Realty in Cape Girardeau, recently earned the Century 21 System's Centurion Producer Award following her continuous sales success. This is the highest recognition award for performance awarded to agents. Clark was the highest producer in the Century 21 System in Cape Girardeau County in gross closed commissions. She did in excess of $9.1 million in sales volume for 2004. Clark is a member of the Centurion Honor Society, which recognizes the Centurion level sales production for a minimum of five years.
Realty Executives names awards
Realty Executives of Cape Girardeau recently announced several awards given to its sales associates. Terri Penrod and Deb and Jeff Martin received the Executive Club Award at Realty Executives International's 18th annual national convention in Orlando, Fla. The award is given to the top 10 percent of agents in each franchise based on annual earnings. Susan Cole, Bill Cole, Michelle Doughten, Lori Friese and Tanya Yantis also attended the convention in February, along with 600 other attendees from across the country.
Cape businesses win awards
Two downtown Cape Girardeau businesses, the Southeast Missourian and Renaissance, and historic preservationist Terri Foley recently received awards at the fifth annual Old Town Cape Dinner. Mike and Sherry Yaeger, owners of Renaissance, a home decor shop, were presented with the second "John Boardman Excellence in Historic Rehabilitation Award." The Southeast Missourian received the "Charles L. Hutson Visionary Award".
The Boardman Award is named for the late architect who renovated many downtown buildings. The Hutson Award is named for the downtown merchant and civic leader who died in 2003. Foley received the Volunteer of the Year award.
