Bond's office accepting academy applications

Sen. Kit Bond is accepting applications for the U.S. Service Academies for the class beginning in 2003. Nominations to the Air Force, West Point, Merchant Marine and Naval Academies are available for qualified applicants.

The first step to the appointment process is submitting an application to a U.S. Senator or member of Congress. Applicants who will graduate from high school in 2003 may apply. The deadline for requesting an application is Nov. 15, 2002, and all application materials must be received in the senator's office by Dec. 6, 2002.

Complete applicant packets are now available on the senator's web site and can be downloaded at bond. senate. gov, requested via e-mail from the senator's academy coordinator teresa_poole@bond.senate.gov, or contact his Springfield office at 1700 South Campbell, Suite E., Springfield, Mo. 65807.

Nominees are chosen on the basis of personal merit. Merit criteria include evidence of character, leadership, scholarship, physical aptitude and fitness, goals and motivation. Students must be between 17-21 years of age, U.S. citizens and legal resident of Missouri.

SIU-C makes plans for Honors Day

Southern Illinois University at Carbondale will hold Honors Days ceremonies Sunday, April 7, recognizing 2,326 undergraduate students who have achieved academic excellence over the course of their college careers.

These students attend classes full time, earning cumulative grade-point averages of 3.5 or better on all work completed since they enrolled at SIUC.

Shawnee College holds summer, fall registration

Summer registration for Shawnee Community College will begin Monday, April 15 and will close June 13. Students can register during regular college hours and from 4 to 7 p.m. on June 4-6. Registration will continue through the first week of classes on June 10-13. Students planning to take summer semester classes should enroll early to ensure the classes they want are available. The summer semester begins June 10.

Appointments for registration are not required but recommended. Students can complete an enrollment form prior to the meeting to speed up the enrollment process. Summer registration is available both on and off the main campus with an SCC advisor or counselor. The extension centers are also equipped with at least one advisor to aid with any students' summer register questions.

Scholarships available to Union County residents

The Southern Illinois University Foundation has announced that the Messamore Scholarship would again this year grant scholarships of varying amounts to deserving Union County residents. This scholarship will be granted on the basis of scholarship and financial need and will be usable only at Southern Illinois University.

Applications are currently available in Dan Anderson's office at 1000 N. Main St.-Barnes Hall, Anna, Ill., and may be picked up in person from 8:30 to noon and 1-4 p.m. Monday through Friday or mailed upon request to prospective applicants.

Students currently holding Messamore Scholarships should re-apply for one year extensions of their scholarships. Other applicants will be limited to 2002 graduates of Union County high schools.

Roth named to 2002 dean's honor list

Julie Roth was named to the Cedarville University Dean's Honor List for the 2002 winter quarter. She is a sophomore majoring in communications.

She is the daughter of Dennis and Joan Roth of Cape Girardeau.

Cedarville University is a Christian college of arts, sciences, and professional programs in Cedarville, Ohio.

Carnahan taking military academy applications

Sen. Jean Carnahan has announced that she is accepting applications to the U.S. Military Academies for admission in the summer of 2003. The deadline for receiving the completed application packets in her Jefferson City office is Nov. 8, 2002.

Carnahan nominates 10 Missourians for each opening she has in each academy, with the final selections coming from the academies themselves. Students are able to apply for nomination to the U.S. Military Academy at West Point, the U.S. Naval Academy at Annapolis, the Air Force Academy at Colorado Springs, and the Merchant Marine Academy at Kings Point.

She uses a competitive application process to screen applicants. She will evaluate applicants on ACT or SAT scores, high school grade point average, leadership abilities, and physical aptitude. She will also use an academy selection advisory board to interview and recommend the top applicants to her for nomination.

Kelly announces date for preschool screening

The Kelly Parents as Teachers program will hold preschool screening from 8:30 a.m. to 2:30 p.m. Tuesday, April 16, in the Kelly School elementary library.

Children ages 1-5 (who will not attend kindergarten in the fall) and who live in the Kelly School District are eligible for the free screening. The children will be screened in hearing, vision, height and weight, dental, nutritional assessment, and general development.

Please bring the child's shot records and a list of what your child ate and drank the previous day.
