Central High School book chat Wednesday

The Central High School Book Club will hold its monthly book chat at 3 p.m. Wednesday. The discussion will focus on "A Prayer for Owen Meany" and will be led by Susan Hekmat.

The event is open to the public.

Marching Tigers place first in Oct. 6 contest

The Cape Central Marching Tigers band participated in the Washington Marching Contest on Saturday and placed first in its division.

The band's next contest will be Oct. 27 at the TWA Dome in St. Louis.

The band will perform in the Southeast Missouri State University Homecoming parade at 9:30 a.m. Oct. 20.

The Marching Tigers would like to thank Alberston's for donating 1,600 bottles of water and PMS Fabrications for installing a new bed for the Marching Tigers trailer used to haul equipment.

Central grad elected to Valparaiso post

Jennifer Bonner of Cape Girardeau was elected to serve as executive secretary of Valparaiso University's Student Senate for the 2001-02 academic year. Student senate is the student legislative body at the university.

Bonner is a junior political science and Spanish major in the College of Arts and Sciences. She is the daughter of Sandra Bonner and is a graduate of Central High School.

Deadline approaching for teaching cruise

The 2001 Missouri Teacher Barge Cruise, offering K-12 teachers a workshop experience on the water called Discovering Missouri Rivers, will be heading up river on Oct. 20 and 27.

The itinerary for each cruise will include presentations on the history, geography, economics and conservation of Missouri's rivers, hands-on activities and plenty of observation. Workshops run from 8 a.m. to noon.

The trips will take place in St. Louis, Jefferson City and Kansas City.

To register by mail, send a $10 check with teacher name, school, grade and subject, address, telephone number and e-mail address to: Discovering Missouri Rivers Teacher Workshop, P.O. Box 32, Washington, Mo., 63090. Registration may also be made by calling the Missouri Press Association's Newspaper in Education Office at (636) 390-2821.

College of Science honors four professors

Four Southeast Missouri State University professors in the College of Science and Mathematics have received service, teaching or research awards.

Dr. Walt Lilly, biology professor, received the Service Award. Dr. Margaret Waterman, associate professor of biology, received the teaching award. Dr. Bruce Hathaway, chemistry professor, received the research award. Dr. Allen Gathman, biology professor, received the College of Science and Mathematics PRIDE Award, which goes to a faculty member who has excelled at teaching, scholarship and service.
