Big book sale at West Lane Elementary
West Lane Elementary will be hosting a Scholastic Warehouse sale Jan. 11-13. The sale is open to the public and includes a selection including picture books, chapter books, reference, cookbooks, software and gift items. All books are 50 percent off the cover price. Sale hours are 4-7 p.m. Jan. 11; 10 a.m.-4 p.m. Jan. 12; and 1-4 p.m. Jan. 13.
Southwest Missouri releases dean's list
The following students attained the dean's list at Southwest Missouri State University in Springfield, Mo.:

Lewis accepts Texas Tech scholarship
Jason Lewis, son of Dennis and Cheryl Hill of Cape Girardeau, recently accepted a two-year scholarship from Texas Tech University in Lubbock, Texas, to pursue his masters degree in geosciences. Lewis will also be employed at TTU as a teacher assistant. A 1997 graduate of Central High School, Lewis graduated from the University of Missouri-Rolla in 2001 from the school of mines and metallurgy with a bachelor of science degree in geology and geophysics.
Notre Dame student receives scholarship
Danny Robert, a senior at Notre Dame High School, has been selected to receive a Chancellor's Scholarship to the University of Missouri at Rolla. Robert plans to major in electrical engineering.
Sophomore receives three scholarships
Tim Robert, a sophomore chemical engineering student at the University of Missouri at Rolla, has been selected to receive three scholarships during the 2001-2002 academic year. Robert received the Tristan G. Pinzke Sigma Nu Memorial Scholarship, and was also chosen Freshman of the Year for Sigma Nu. The Theta Tau Omega engineering society also selected Robert as the male Freshman of the Year for the UMR campus. These awards totaled a scholarship value of $1,100.
Two science teachers receive $100 grants
The Chemistry Club at Southeast Missouri State University has awarded two $100 grants to area science teachers for use in classroom projects. The recipients of the grants are Kenneth Lunsford of Fredericktown Middle School and Alice Kassel of Ste. Genevieve.
Both teachers exhibited great enthusiasm for the learning of their students and notable creativity in the design of classroom labs.
Student makes dean's list at Arizona college
Erin Vogt, daughter of Fred and Pat Vogt of Cape Girardeau, made the dean's list at the University of Arizona for the fall semester 2001. She is a communications major. Vogt will graduate in May 2002.
Academy announces national science winner
The United States Achievement Academy has announced that Michael Painton of Painton, Mo., has been named a United States National Award Winner in the science category. Painton attends Bell City High school, and is the son of Don and Rhonda Painton.
FFA holding conference in Cape Wednesday
The Future Farmers of America will hold seven Greenhand Motivational Conferences across Missouri this week. The Cape Girardeau meeting will be at 4 p.m. Wednesday at Glenn Auditorium at Dempster Hall on the campus of Southeast Missouri State University. Scholarships available from corn growers
Missouri high school and college students may now apply for one of six Missouri Corn Scholarships. The Missouri Corn Growers Association and Missouri Corn Merchandising Council will award four $750 scholarships to graduating high school seniors, and two $750 scholarships to college juniors in 2002.
Applicants must be Missouri residents from a farm or rural area. High school students must plan to attend a two- or four-year Missouri college and major in agronomy or a related subject. College applicants must be a junior enrolled in a Missouri four-year college or university majoring in agronomy or a related subject. The scholarship funds will apply toward the senior year of expenses for college applicants.

Bender graduates with master of arts degree
Steven Bender of Cape Girardeau recently graduated from University of Nebraska Lincoln in Lincoln, Neb., with a master of arts degree.
Cape student on dean's list at Missouri Western
Alyssa Holyfield recently attained the fall semester 2001 dean's list at Missouri Western State College in St. Joseph, Mo. Holyfield, of Cape Girardeau, is a freshman.
