With a proposal in the Missouri legislature that would ban radar detectors in automobiles, the Southeast Missourian asked people what they thought of making the radar detectors illegal in Missouri.
Paul Kuhlmann: "It would not matter, because the detectors that will really do you any good are so expensive that most people would not buy them. The cheap ones might help in town, but they don't help much at high speed on the highway against the `instant on' radar."
Peter Hilty: "I feel that they should be outlawed. I really feel that it is frustration of the legal process to have equipment like this."
Loretta Schneider: "It's a device that allows people to break the law, and I certainly have a problem with that. It should be outlawed all over the country, however, and not just in a state. With interstate highways, the laws should be pretty much the same all over the country."
Janice Blanchard: "I think they should be illegal. The law enforcement is out there to save our lives. We have to have rules and regulations. It is not fair for people to use them to avoid abiding by the law."
Julie Sumner: "I think it should be everyone's choice whether to have one or not, so I don't think they should be outlawed. I know a lot of people use them to break the law, but some might slow down to the speed limit if it alerts them to radar."
Robert Dykes: "I don't think radar detectors should be illegal in Missouri. Basically, it's just a piece of radio equipment. Some people use them to speed, but they can be a self-defense measure against radar that is not always accurate."
