The Southeast Missourian asked people who watch MTV what they think about the music television cable channel which, has received criticism recently in the community.
William Campbell: "I think MTV is pretty good. I watch it quite a bit, and there have been no adverse effects on me. It's not true that those who watch it are going to turn into drug addicts, as some parents say. I like any type of music, and MTV has variety that I like."
Nicole Robert: "If MTV offends you, just turn it off. I watch it about an hour or so a week. I do think it is exploiting, and I see why some people would want to ban it. I've seen some videos that I didn't like, so then I just change the channel. If you pay for it, it's your choice."
Roy Roper: "I don't watch MTV that often, usually while flipping channels, but what I do see of it I really don't care for. I see a lot on it that I don't agree with. A lot of the videos reveal things that are not good for kids. It would be good if parents could lock it out."
Jeff Biester: "I think MTV is fine. It gives us something else to do, because the older people don't want us cruising Broadway. They play music that I like. I watch three or four times a week at least. People who don't want it don't have to watch it."
Laverne Smith: "I watch it sometimes when I'm flipping channels, and I like some of the videos on it. I would say that 50 percent of what I have seen on MTV is too vulgar for young children to watch in the home. A lot of the music is great, but some of the videos are terrible."
Sara Moore: "Sometimes I want to listen to music, so I just turn it on instead listening to the radio. I don't like the heavy metal videos. I like watching a show called `120 Minutes' which has a certain kind of music that I like. Sometimes I get bored with it and turn it off."
