The Southeast Missourian asked people what they thought about Baseball Commissioner Fay Vincent's order which moves the St. Louis Cardinals to the National League Western Division as a result of league expansion.
Jerry Bittle: "I think it will give the Cardinals a better chance to win the division one of these days. They will play more games in the west than they will in the east. Right now, the teams in the west are weaker than the powerhouses in Cincinnati, Pittsburgh and New York."
Terry Slattery: "I think it will dilute some of the rivalries the Cardinals have had with the Mets and some of the other teams from the east. I think it will hurt some of their television viewers with more of the games starting later out in the west."
Michele Tomlinson: "I think the rivalry with the Mets will let up. I would rather have seen them stay in the Eastern Division. However, if they have more television games starting later, then I could see more games start. I might fall asleep half-way through them, though."
Chad Pierce: "I think it will be good for the Cardinals because they won't be going up against such good teams like the Pittsburgh Pirates and the Cincinnati Reds in the fight for the division. They might have trouble with the Cubs and the Giants."
Sean Stuckey: "I don't think the move is right because of the tradition of the Cardinals being in the east. They should stay where they are. However, it could be a plus for the team, because the other teams in the west are not as tough. I liked the rivalry of the Cardinals and the Mets."
Laura Kline: "If the Cardinals play more games starting later on television, I probably won't watch as many. I don't think they will play the Mets with the same intensity. I don't think the move will matter that much for the Cardinals, as long as they have Ozzie Smith."
