The Southeast Missourian asked people what they thought about the use of animal organs for transplanting into humans. Recently, surgeons transplanted a baboon liver into a man.
Betty Schlitt: "I think it is rather revolting to think about an animal organ being transplanted into a human body. I would not feel comfortable with having a part of an animal in my body. I don't think this is the way God intended things."
Cathi Schlosser:"I would rather see more people become aware of the need to become organ donors if they die. I don't think it is proper to raise animals in order to kill them to make a person live. I don't think that's what God had in mind."
Thomas Mason: "If the procedure is successful for a human being and done properly with respect to the animal, I think it would be fine. This is science. If it is for the benefit of mankind, I feel that it is necessary to use an animal for this."
Carla Haertling: "I don't see that using animals for this is the answer. We should go for a national campaign where more people would be willing to donate their organs when they pass away. I'm not totally opposed to the animal research, but it should be put second."
Walter Vinyard: "I had mixed emotions when I first heard about it. It's good for the human race, but what about the poor animal? However, we raise cattle to eat or chickens, or whatever. So if doing this can save a life, it seems all right."
Helen Rodriguez: "I don't agree with this. I feel that animal organs should belong to animals and human organs should belong to humans. I believe that people should be made more aware of the importance of human organ donations. It takes little time to fill out a card."
