The Southeast Missourian asked people for their reaction to comments by Vice President Dan Quayle about the television show "Murphy Brown" which he said "mocked the importance of fathers" with Brown having a child out of wedlock.

Terry Stacks: "I think Vice President Quayle's real message is that we as a society need to get back to our grass roots morality. I think he was trying to get at the fact that Hollywood is tries to build a larger base of rights for the loud minority at the expense of the quiet majority."

Tommy Baker: "I think he went way overboard to include a fictional comedy show in his speech. He should not even have brought it up since it is not a true situation. He could have discussed family life and made his point in a different manner than by using Murphy Brown to do it."

Stephanie Norris: "I can see why he said it's important that we have fathers for role models in television shows. I'm not sure that he should be criticizing this TV show as vice president. I don't think that a TV show would influence a lot people to be that way. There's a lot of that already."

May Garmon: "To me, the vice president should not have ever said it. What she wants to do is her business and that's fine. Other people should not tell them how to have a child, as long as they are able to take care of it. That's their business."

Shelly Wachter: "I don't approve of the vice president's remarks because I think it is very possible to have a child out of wedlock and be able to raise it fine. I don't think he had the right to say that about her because he is not a mother. It's everyone's own choice."

Tom Patrick: "I think that a lot of single women can raise a child on their own if they choose to do that. I think there are a lot of things on TV that are a lot worse than this. There are more important things that the vice president could talk about instead of something as silly as this TV show."
