The Southeast Missourian asked people how they felt about a measure in the Missouri legislature that would permit some citizens to legally carry concealed weapons through licensing by county sheriffs.
Beth Knott: "It would depend on a person's reason to have a concealed weapon. The more guns you have, the more risk you have for accidental shootings. We don't need any more weapons on the street. As it is now, some kids can get weapons easier than they can get drugs."
James Green: "I don't feel it's such a good idea. It could be abused in some fashion. There may be safeguards, but they might not be safe enough. Someone could use poor judgment with a weapon. It's a judgment call anytime you get into a situation with a weapon."
Trent Ball: "Consistency is one thing, but differences in county sheriffs is another thing. What is a good reason to have a concealed weapon? Not feeling safe? A gun permit may last for five years, but suppose after one year the person becomes a little psychotic or paranoid?"
Barbara Giddens: "I don't believe our society needs more guns, and certainly not concealed guns. We all deal with people who we don't really know. We would be more concerned about the possibility that a person might be carrying a concealed weapon if more people had them."
Robin Sims: "I think it's a bad idea. Suppose a person gets a permit, and then two years later they develop an enemy. What if I was in a situation where that person "cracked" and they carried a handgun that was legal? What if they pulled it out and I was in their line of fire?"
Pat Hagan: "I feel that they are opening Pandora's Box if they let more people carry concealed weapons. A person may have a clean record when they get the permit, but they may run into trouble down the line with it. A lot of accidents happen when guns are nearby."
