The Southeast Missourian asked people why they volunteered their time to help fill sandbags Sunday morning at the Red Star Baptist Church.
Jim Johnson said: "We drove up from Portageville this morning. We saw the news broadcast and didn't know the flood was this intense. We decided instead of going to church this morning we would come up here and help these people out."
Sue Gleason said: "I am here helping this morning because I have family down here. We plan on staying and filling sandbags as long as it takes. We've already been down here helping all week."
Chris Heiden said: "When I was a kid the Red Cross was there to help my family and I decided I should pass that charity on and spread it around. I've been out here a while and plan on staying as long as I can in this heat."
Jack Breeden said: "I didn't have anything else to do this morning and these people need all the help they can get. You never know when you might be the one needing help. So here I am."
Colette Russel said, "I am here today to help these people out and I plan on staying as long as I can."
Tommie Estes said: "I am here because of the need for help and I wasn't doing anything else so I decided to volunteer my services. Someday I might need some help and they will be there to help me too."
