The Southeast Missourian asked people what they thought of Gov. Carnahan's $360 million school tax proposal which, if passed, would benefit Missouri schools.
Dawn Kelly said, "It is wonderful they want to put more money into the educational system but the system does not need it. It needs help in other ways. So much money is not being used properly. We still have kids getting out of school who can't read and write."
Jeff Jackson said, "We have a representative government and we should let them make decisions. If we need more money in education they should know and they should be the ones to make the decision to raise more money. It's their job and we elected them."
Rebecca Canoy said, "I think raising taxes for businesses and people who make over $100,000 a year is a good idea. The working middle class can't afford to pay any more taxes and the ones who make that much can afford to contribute more money."
Dwayne Glasper said, "I saw the commercial on TV where the kids were talking about no heat in some of the schools and I have spent some of those days in those very schools and they can be miserable. If we were allowed to vote for it I would vote yes."
Bob Jackson said, "I feel it's a good trend towards more support in education in the state. The more we can support our educational systems and our teachers and administrators the better we will all be in the long run. I think it is a definite plus for Missouri."
Reuben Edwards said, "I don't think it is right to pass any tax increase without the voters' approval. It is totally wrong. As taxpayers we all have a strong opinion when it comes to raising any taxes. Therefore, we should be given the opportunity to vote."
