The Southeast Missourian asked people what they thought about the $1 billion aid package President Clinton offered to Boris Yeltsin to help alleviate the Russian economy.
John Hitt said: "He should give us the money. Our economic position, even though it may not be as bad as Russia's, still needs help. He said he was going to do a lot of things for our country and he hasn't done much yet, and now he's in Russia spending a billion dollars."
Curtis Butler said: "Because of the situation Russia has been in we can't allow that country to go back to the state of cold war again. I believe we are here to help people, and our debt is so huge it is going to be there even if we don't give the money to Russia."
Greg Maxwell said: "My only problem with it is when I look at our own situation in this country I think there is more that could be done. But I think Yeltsin is going in the right direction and needs our help if he is going to achieve what he is needs to achieve."
Ron Wren said: "I think he ought to start worrying about the United States a little bit more and its economy and the direction it is going right now. We are in as worst shape as any other country right now including Russia."
Kathy McLaughlin said: "I really feel that President Clinton should spend the money right here in the United States instead of over there in Russia. There are plenty of people over here that could use the money too."
Sharon Simpkins said: "As far as Clinton giving Yeltsin and Russia money for their economy, I feel like charity should begin at home, and I think we need to take care of our own people and economy first. Then maybe we can help others."
