The Southeast Missourian asked people what they thought about the hard-line lawmakers in Russia trying to remove Boris Yeltsin from office.
Walt Wilburn said, "I think they wanted a quick fix and they did not get it so they are reverting back to the only thing they know, communist rule. Of the two choices, Yeltsin or the lawmakers, I think the lawmakers as a group should be making the laws."
Retha Popp said, "I think they should give him more of a chance to do everything he can to help the country and reform the constitution to one that will work for most of the people. From what I understand from watching the news, the people are behind him."
Michael Scott said, "Yeltsin is trying to help the country and trying to bring them through many changes. Economic perils, unemployment and high rates of inflation are necessary if Russia is to ever reach a point where they can compete with the rest of the world."
Andrea Stephenson said, "It took our country 200 years to get our constitution put together and we borrowed it from Britain. The people are going to have to be the ones to decide what they want and come up with a formal body of law they can amend."
Darren Estes said, "What Yeltsin is doing is trying to bring the Russian people and country into a more modern era. If we let them remove him they might revert back to hard-line communism and we might end up in another cold war with them."
Don Dannenmueller said, "I think we should do everything we can to keep Russia from going back to the old communist way. If that means helping keep Yeltsin in office we definitely should support him. The people should be the ones ruling the country."
