The Southeast Missourian asked people how they felt about riverboat gambling coming to Cape Girardeau and the City Council's decision to allow the people to vote on the issue.
Tom Morris said, "Councilman Limbaugh said it best at the last council meeting. He said there were moral questions that need to be answered and people need to be deciding on those issues. I feel the council doesn't need to be deciding moral issues for the city."
Marion Hale said, "I think we should get to vote on riverboat gambling in Cape Girardeau and I think we ought to have it. It would be good business. I would go down there and use it. I think people in Cape Girardeau and the surrounding areas would use it too."
Jennifer Bergeron said, "I think it is good because it would bring more construction business downtown and that is the trade I am in. I think it would also revive that part of downtown area. I also think the people should be the ones voting on this issue. It's the peoples's town."
Mary Brown said, "I have heard the money from riverboat gambling is suppose to go for education. That is why I am for it. I think we need better education than what we have now. I'm glad they are letting us vote. Some decisions they make aren't always for the best."
Eddie Willis said, "I really don't have any feelings about it one way or the other. Although it might help Cape Girardeau financially, people like me won't go down there. It will be more out of town people. But I wouldn't base my opinion to vote on it on the City Council's opinion."
Paula Jaurez said, "First of all I do agree with riverboat gambling. It will perhaps bring more entertainment and tourism to the city and that would be good. Second, it is a good decision for the City Council to let the people vote on this issue too. I hope they vote yes."
