The management of patients with acute respiratory distress, coronary heart disease and chronic renal failure and trends in the assessment and case management of the geriatric population will be the focus of a daylong conference sponsored by Southeast Missouri Hospital Oct. 15.
Intended for medical-surgical nurses, critical care nurses and nursing students, "Trends in Medical-Surgical Nursing '92" will be held from 8 a.m. to 3:45 p.m. in the hospital's Harrison Room.
Speakers will be Southeast nurses Diane Holzum, a clinical nurse specialist; Regional Heart Center Coordinator Linda Heitman; and Dialysis Charge Nurse Pat Isaacs; and Brenda Johnson, an instructor in the Department of Nursing at Southeast Missouri State University.
Holzum's topic will be centered around patients with acute respiratory distress. Heitman will discuss new techniques and concepts in the diagnosis and treatment of coronary heart disease. She will also discuss patient outcome, reimbursement and research, nursing's challenge for the 1990s.
The assessment and treatment of patients with chronic renal failure; research and trends in renal therapy; and the ethical and financial challenges of dialysis will be the subject for Isaacs, while Johnson will turn her attention to the "graying" of America and its impact on trends and research in gerontology.
The conference carries 6.0 contact hours through the Missouri Nurses Association. The registration fee of $35 for nurses and $17.50 for students includes materials and breaks. For more information, call Southeast's Educational Services Department at 651-5833. Deadline for registration is Oct. 12.
