A portion of South Sprigg Street will be closed to traffic Tuesday.

The Missouri State Highway and Transportation Department announced Saturday the temporary closing, from south of Morgan Oak to Maple Street.

The closure, from midmorning to midafternoon, is necessary to allow concrete pavement work in the reconstruction of Sprigg Street at the intersection of the relocated Route 74, which will eventually lead to the new Mississippi River bridge.

Directional signs, Cape Girardeau city police and barricades will be used to appropriately re-direct traffic onto and through the detour.

Light traffic (autos and pickups) will be detoured to Frederick Street between Jefferson and Maple, said officials

To avoid damage to city streets, heavier truck traffic will be detoured from Truck Route 34 -- Sprigg and Southern Expressway -- onto existing Route 34 (William and Sprigg) between Morgan Oak and William, via Kingshighway Business Route 1-55.

The temporary closure, and another to be announced later, will allow the north and southbound lanes of Sprigg to be reconstructed on an accelerated schedule and reduce the period of disruption of traffic in the area.
