According to figures from the Missouri Department of Corrections, the criminal recidivism rate for parolees was a little more than 17 percent in 2005. That fell to 15 percent in 2006 and 14.5 percent last year.

Missouri has nearly 17,000 offenders on parole.

The criminal recidivism rate does not count cases in which parolees were returned to custody for technical violations, such as failing to meet with their parole officers.
