Parma man killed in accident

PARMA, Mo. -- A Parma man died last week after his vehicle was struck by a tractor-trailer early Tuesday in New Madrid County.

Charles A. Powell, 64, of Parma was pronounced dead at 10:22 a.m. Wednesday at Barnes-Jewish Hospital in St. Louis. Powell was traveling south on Route 153 half a mile south of Parma at 6:35 a.m. Tuesday when a southbound tractor-trailer attempted to pass his vehicle as Powell was making a left turn, according to the Missouri State Highway Patrol. The tractor-trailer struck Powell's vehicle.

Powell and his wife, Sherra A. Rayburn, 54, who received serious injuries, initially were flown to a Cape Girardeau hospital. The driver of the tractor-trailer received minor injuries and refused treatment at the scene.
