Trail of Tears State Park is offering a Junior Naturalist program this summer young people and their families.
The first meeting is set for Saturday at 10:30 a.m. at the Visitor's Center.
Claire Zielinski, a volunteer naturalist with the Missouri Department of Natural Resources, will conduct the program.
"All ages can participate," Zielinski said. "It was designed for children ages 7 to 14, but we are encouraging the whole family to get involved."
Through the program, participants complete projects toward earning a Junior Naturalist badge.
Children study a living plant or animal, attend at least four naturalist programs at the park, identify 10 trees, birds, plants or reptiles, complete a three-hour service project, and help with two naturalist-sponsored events.
"The program is provided by the state at no charge," Zielinski said. "I think its wonderful to get kids interested in the parks and out exploring nature."
The program is very flexible, Zielinski said. Children may work on their projects any Saturday or Sunday through August.
If a child completes the requirements for his or her naturalist badge, he or she can begin a second series and earn a star to accompany the badge.
"I am planning to do a lot of hikes, mostly because I enjoy that a lot. The kids have to be out in the park because they will have to be able to identify at least 10 trees, birds, plants or reptiles.
"They will also have a chance to learn about the park itself.
The Junior Naturalist program is offered in all Missouri state parks.
