As the Jackson Civic Center nears its grand opening in early 2016, city officials are appealing to residents to help fund some special equipment and additions.
The facility was funded in part by a $4.2 million donation from the Southeast Missouri Medical Center Inc., $2.8 million from the Federal Emergency Management Agency, a land donation from the Clark family and a quarter-cent sales tax approved in late 2012.
But while the civic center is substantially complete, Jackson's fundraising committee is trying to maximizing the center's features.
The committee hopes to raise more than $205,000 for fixed-cost items such as pickleball nets, paddles and balls, a defibrillator and kitchen equipment.
They also are raising money for "open-end" expenses such as landscaping, board games and art to decorate the facility.
Mayor Dwain Hahs and fundraising committee chairwoman Kathy Johnson were unavailable for comment Monday on the committee's progress so far. But in an open letter to Jackson residents, Johnson encouraged residents to chip in.
"Every donation, big or small, will be greatly appreciated," she wrote. "It is generous people like you who ensure a brighter future for our youth and community."
In another open letter posted to the city's Facebook page, Hahs stated the donations will help enhance a new addition to Jackson's parks system.
"With all the available funding [from original donors, sales tax, etc.], there are still high costs associated with the furnishing of the Civic Center," Hahs wrote. "The Jackson Park Board gratefully acknowledges those that have donated their time and funds to this worthwhile facility and respectfully requests that other citizens and businesses consider joining with those donors in their support of what is truly a community project -- the Jackson Civic Center."
Donors may contribute at a number of amount levels -- from Platinum-level sponsorship at $10,000 to the smallest increment of $100.
Platinum, Gold and Silver sponsors -- $10,000, $5,000 and $2,500, respectively -- will be recognized with plaques on the founding donors' wall and be recognized at the civic center's eventual opening ceremony.
Personalized paving bricks come with donations of $100, $250 and $500.
Those interested in donating are encouraged to call Johnson at (573) 243-8331.
