Palestinian prime minister won't resign

RAMALLAH, West Bank -- Palestinian Prime Minister Ismail Haniyeh will not resign. On Friday, the PLO's Executive Committee, which is dominated by Fatah, called on Haniyeh and his Hamas-led government to step down to make way for a new premier who could resume talks with President Mahmoud Abbas of Fatah on forming a national unity government. Tensions between the two parties have grown in recent days, with Abbas saying that coalition talks -- aimed at ending a crippling foreign aid boycott against the Hamas-led government -- had reached a "dead end."

More than 300 dead in Philippine villages

PADANG, Philippines -- The number of people killed by Typhoon Durian has climbed to more than 300 as rescuers searched mountain villages buried under mud and boulders. Officials fear the number of those killed by Typhoon Durian will rise as rescue operations continue in devastated villages on the slopes of the Mayon volcano in the northern Philippines. Another 300 people were missing, and the storm affected 800,000 people, officials said.

Bridge collapsing on train kills 33 in India

NEW DELHI -- A colonial-era footbridge collapsed onto railroad tracks in eastern India on Saturday, burying a train beneath tons of red rock and killing at least 33 passengers. Rescuers struggled for hours to remove the pile of concrete, slabs of red stone and debris from the mangled sleeper car. By nightfall, they reached the crushed section and discovered that the car -- believed to have been largely empty -- was full of bodies. The 150-year-old arched footbridge had been in the process of being dismantled.
