SIKESTON -- A cleaning crew at Union Planters Bank didn't get as much work done as they planned Friday night after they spent nearly eight hours trapped in an elevator.

At 12:20 a.m. officers with the Sikeston Department of Public Safety were dispatched to Union Planters Bank at 425 N. Main. When they arrived they met with a man who said his wife and mother-in-law had not returned home from their job of cleaning the bank. They usually returned home by 9 p.m.

The car the women drove to the bank was secure in the parking lot, but attempts to contact them in the building were unsuccessful. Officers then contacted the president of the bank, Mike Pobst, who responded to let officers in the building.

Upon entering the building, officers found the women trapped in the elevator between floors. The elevator was then restarted, and the women, trapped in the elevator since 5:30 p.m., were unharmed.
