The 12th annual River City Music Festival, kicking off at 6 p.m. today in downtown Cape Girardeau, unveils some new offerings this year in addition to 30 bands playing nonstop live music for two days.

The Rock the Runway Fashion Show plans on presenting a wild, music-themed whirl of avant-garde trends and edgy dance moves, said Majhon Phillips, coordinator of the event.

"It's not so much your typical fashion show," Phillips said.

The fashion show will be from 3 to 5 p.m. Saturday at the Broadway stage.

About 65 models of all ages, some college students, some professional dancers, collaborated on the performance, and Style Shop Lifestyles of Jackson has some hair, dress and makeup tricks to dazzle the audience.

"They're giving everything they have," Phillips said of the crew working on putting the show together.

Phillips wanted to leave some of the styles that will debut a surprise, but she revealed a few, including "sewing" ribbons and glitter onto the models' faces, arranging brightly colored wood pieces in their hair, and using trash bags as clothing.

The performance, partly choreographed by Phillips, partly by the models themselves, revolves around "crazy, high-energy music" and leaves room for some improvisation, Phillips said.

Phillips, who majored in music at Southeast Missouri State University, said she was looking to "spark interest in the new generation" in this field of performing arts.

An hour before the fashion show, the River City's Got Talent competition will be held at the Themis Street stage.
