OSHA propose $126,500 fine in KC plant explosion

KANSAS CITY, Mo. (AP) -- Federal regulators recommend fining a chemical company more than $126,000 after a February explosion at a Kansas City distribution plant.

The Occupational Safety and Health Administration says it found numerous violations at the plant owned by Chemcentral.

A series of blasts on Feb. 7 destroyed much of the 5-acre plant, injured two workers and cast a pall of black smoke over much of Kansas City. Fire officials determined it started when employees were offloading a petroleum-based product.

Inspectors with OSHA cited the company for improper storage and handling of liquids, failure to provide guard rails, and failure to train employees on hazards of liquids.

The company says it is reviewing the report and will respond in 15 days.
