JACKSON -- There are still some openings for the Jackson Noon Optimist Club's Safety City program.
Classes start May 11 and continue May 18, June 8 and June 15 for the program, which emphasizes traffic safety, fire safety, pedestrian safety, stranger danger and drug and alcohol abuse. The course is open to children in grades K-4. The fee is $4 and includes a 6-foot bike flag and bicycle helmets.
The class will be held in Jackson City Park west of the lake.
Safety City resembles a miniature city with a maze of sidewalks, street signs and miniature buildings. Recently Jack Johannes, assisted by members of his Boy Scout troop, constructed a large wooden truck to be used for the city as part of his Eagle Scout project.
Safety City has earned several awards for the Jackson club, including best overall project for any club in Optimist International.
To register, or for more information, call Beverly Nelson, co-chair of this year's program, at 243-4404 or 243-5010.
