One person was taken to a hospital to be treated for smoke inhalation after an early Saturday morning house fire on Good Hope Street, according to a report filed by Cape Girardeau Fire Department battalion chief Brad Dillow. The call of a fire at 1816 Good Hope St. came in at 3:43 a.m. Dillow said the fire was started by a cigarette burning a bed, but the four people inside the structure woke up in time to escape the fire. The fire caused an estimated $5,000 in minor smoke and fire damage throughout the home, the report states. The fire was not deemed suspicious and isn't related to two house fires on Lorimier and Middle streets that happened Friday, battalion chief Fred Vincel said.
