One killed in Southern Illinois highway accident

JONESBORO, Ill. -- The Union County Sheriff's Department is investigating a fatal Monday traffic accident. The accident took place on Highway 146, one mile west of Jonesboro.

Both the driver and passenger were transported to Union County Hospital after the vehicle went off the road and struck a tree.

The passenger, a 67-year-old woman, later died. The driver, a 69-year-old man, had major injuries and was later airlifted to Saint Francis Medical Center in Cape Girardeau.

The names of the victims were not immediately released.
