A car wreck during rush hour Monday left one child dead and three others injured, said Sgt. Jason Selzer, spokesman for Cape Girardeau Police Department.
The accident occurred when a minivan traveling westbound on Highway 74 near the entrance to the Shawnee Sports Complex at Minnesota Avenue struck a parked vehicle, Selzer said.
All four occupants of the minivan were transported to a nearby hospital for treatment, Selzer said.
One, a 7-year-old child, was rushed to an area hospital, but died an hour later at the hospital of injuries, said Cape Girardeau County Coroner John Clifton.
The child was from the area, but the name has been withheld pending notification of all family members, Clifton said.
There were several people in the other vehicle, but it is unknown whether there were three or four, and none were transported by ambulance to hospitals, Selzer said.
Police continue to the investigate the incident.
