One arrested, one sought after police pursuit in Cape

One man is in custody and another still at large following a nine-minute car chase Tuesday afternoon in Cape Girardeau.

The name of the suspect who was arrested has been withheld pending the filing of formal charges. Police are still looking for the as-yet unidentified man, who faces possible charges of resisting arrest by fleeing, failure to stop for an emergency vehicle and stop sign violations.

According to Sgt. Rick Schmidt, a police officer witnessed what he determined to be a drug transaction at Morgan Oak and Pacific streets. The officer attempted to pull over the vehicle carrying the two men, but the driver took off southbound on Ellis Street, turned onto Jefferson Avenue, then cut through an alley circling back to Morgan Oak. He turned north on Pacific Street, then west on Bloomfield Road.

The driver was driving erratically and running stop signs, Schmidt said.

While pursuing the car on Bloomfield, the officer saw the driver throw something out of the window before turning north on Henderson Avenue. The driver continued to Harmony Street and stopped on Hanover Street, where the driver and the passenger abandoned the car and ran in different directions -- one north, the other south.

Witnesses told officers one of the suspects might be hiding in a vacant house.

"We checked it out and found one individual hiding inside," Schmidt said. "He has been taken into custody, and we believe him to be the passenger."
