The Southeast Missourian asked area residents what their most fond Fourth of July memory was:
James Slinkard, Jackson:
"Quite a few of them stick out. I enjoy the ones with my family watching fireworks. We used to go to a pond, lake or creek and swim."
Robert S. Summers, Marble Hill:
"This is the best one (at the Jaycees Fourth of July celebration in Jackson). They've got more people, the weather's nice and the food is great."
Jennifer Martin, Cape Girardeau:
"Last year was the best Fourth of July I've had. I played mud volleyball and it was the first time my 3-year-old daughter, Tabitha, really knew what was going on."
Carla Daly, Jackson:
"My favorite was when I was 8 years old. We had a big parade in my hometown, Warrenville. It was a special Fourth of July. It was the town's birthday, too."
Les Sladek, Gordonville:
"Back in 1976, there was a contest in Jackson to design the city flag and I won that contest of the Fourth of July when I was 17."
