This week the Southeast Missourian asked, "What do you think of the Missouri General Assembly's efforts to make English the official language for government publications?
The Rev. Phillip Floersh, Cape Girardeau
"I think it's very far-reaching and something of importance because of the fact of being able to communicate ... It's not asking too much of people if they come to live in Cape to use the language that everybody else is using. It's an ongoing challenge. I think the legislature has every right in the world to do that."
Robyn Tyner, Cape Girardeau
"I think it needs to be in different languages because there are different people who live here. Not everybody speaks English."
Cathy Nations, Cape Girardeau
"I think it's fine because predominately everybody knows English. I think everybody else knows Spanish so I think English is predominately like Spanish So I think they should."
Rob Felker, Cape Girardeau
"I think it's both good and bad because it will cut down on spending just a tad, but it will also make documents less accessible to those who don't know English. It's a tough call; its just which of the evils outweighs each other. I think probably it's a good idea."
Tammy Sanders, Cape Girardeau
"I think it should have been done a long time ago. I definitely agree. I mean, this is America and English is the language, and if people want to speak Spanish, French or Italian they should go back to their country."
