This week the Southeast Missourian asked, "Do you think Southeast Missouri State University officials acted appropriately in firing head basketball coach Ron Shumate?"
Ryan Murphy, St. Charles
"I don't think so. I don't think they should have fired him. I think with any situation you're given you have to ... I don't want to say bend the rules or break the rules, but you have to pull some strings here and there to get some good players. I think the basketball team is like one of the few things that we've got really good down here at the university."
Karon Spiller, Cape Girardeau
"You have to think about the whole picture. We're on the outside looking in. We don't know everything that led up to it. We're just going basically by what we hear so I can't really say if they were right or wrong."
Susie Felker, Cape Girardeau
"I would say I don't know if they did it appropriately or not because I don't really know all the facts -- only from what the newspaper tells us or what you hear on the street. They'll (the university) have to make that decision as to whether they fired him appropriately or not. I don't think anybody has enough information except the people totally involved."
Jason Mulholland, Coulterville, Ill.
"Yeah. Our basketball team has (been bad) for years."
Brad Jennings, Silex
"I think so because when the NCAA is coming in here and investigating... Proper precautions need to be taken because that's a big deal when the NCAA comes down."
