The Southeast Missourian asked students at Cape Girardeau Central High School about making up two snow days on national holidays: Martin Luther King Jr. Day and Presidents' Day, Feb. 15.
John Petty: "I don't think it's very good, but I would rather do it in the middle of the year instead of at the end. I plan on taking a trip with friends at the end of school before going to college. I feel bad, though, for those people who want to observe those holidays."
Katie McLain: "I would rather go to school on those holidays to get out earlier for the summer. If you go home on those days, there is not much to do. It's not that big of a deal for me, because I don't have anything planned on those weekends."
Andrew Rehbein: "Are we using these holidays to recognize what these people have done for our country, or is it just another day off from school? On Veterans Day we did not have the day off, but we had an assembly to recognize them. Why not do the same with these days?"
John Fischer: "I think we should not have to go to school on those days. You can't predict the weather. I think we should just go more days at the end of the school year if necessary. The holidays should be observed as they were intended."
Terri Lilly: "I think it would be better to go now than later in the year, because it will be hot then. We might have to go more half-days then. We may get a lot of snow, and we may not. I'm a senior and will graduate, so I want to leave as soon as I can."
