JACKSON -- When workmen put gravel on the approaches next week, the Old Cape Road Bridge will reopen to local traffic for the first time since construction of the new bridge began in September.
Though the bridge will be open to local traffic, asphalt probably won't be poured until April. Under its contract, Penzel Construction Co. has 33 more working days to finish the project.
Public Works Director Jim Roach said warmer weather and rain are needed to aid settling before the asphalt is poured.
Tuesday night, the Jackson Board of Aldermen authorized a payment of nearly $46,000 to Penzel Construction Co. as the fourth payment on the bridge. An additional $12,720.25 was authorized for extra pilings, and $4,278 was authorized for extra sewer work. Eighty percent of the cost of the pilings will be reimbursed by the state.
The meeting was conducted by Alderwoman Valerie Tuschhoff in the absence of Mayor Paul Sander and Mayor Pro Tem Kerry Hoffman. Also absent was Adlerman Fred Leimer.
In other business Tuesday, the board conducted a public hearing on a rezoning request by John Lichtenegger for all the property addressed as 260 and 263 S. Lacey St. from R-2 (single family residential) to R-3 (general residential)
Lichtenegger said he intends to build high-end duplexes on the lots. If not allowed to do so, he said he probably would build low-end single-family residences.
Bill Fadler, who lives nearby at 2420 Bainbridge Road, said he is not concerned about the duplexes being built but is concerned that a zoning change to general residential would allow a number of different uses.
He sought some guarantee that only duplexes would be built on the properties.
