A Cape Girardeau police officer emerged mostly unscathed after crashing into a vacant home Sunday.

The officer, a member of the Cape Girardeau Police Department's special-response team, was responding to the 500 block of Nellie Street in Jackson after a false report about a homicide, said Sgt. Adam Glueck of the Cape Girardeau Police Department.

Glueck said the officer lost control of his vehicle and struck the carport of the empty house at 116 Grandview Drive in Jackson. The home is on a corner lot intersecting Highway 25 at Grandview Acres subdivision south of Jackson. Glueck said he believed the officer failed to navigate a curve in the road.

Owners of the home are in the process of selling it.

The officer only received minor injuries from the accident, and did not need medical attention.

The vehicle struck a gas line and fire hydrant near the home, and officers went door to door warning nearby residents about the leak. Glueck said he was unaware of any other issues caused by the gas leak.

The accident is being investigated by the Jackson police, and Gleuck said Cape Girardeau police also will hold an independent investigation to determine the cause of the accident.
