ST. LOUIS -- An off-duty St. Louis police officer shot a man Friday, after the suspect allegedly demanded the officer's wallet, authorities said.

Assistant police chief Stephen Pollihan said the officer was not hurt. The officer's name has not been released.

Police said the officer was returning from a store, when the man confronted the officer and demanded his wallet in south St. Louis.

The officer turned over the wallet and identified himself as a police officer, Pollihan said.

Investigators said the officer shot the armed man after the suspect pulled out a gun.

The suspect was taken to a nearby hospital and was reported to be in critical condition.
