O'FALLON, Mo. -- Police rescued a 10-year-old girl who they say was kidnapped by her brother's 17-year-old friend.

17-year-old entered the girl's home Thursday through a window he had deliberately left unlocked two days earlier when he visited. After waiting in the basement for about four hours, he abducted the girl from the main level, where she was asleep on a couch, police said.

According to police, the girl resisted and the two of them fell down the basement steps. The dogs at the home apparently began barking after they heard the fall. The barking woke up the girl's mother, who called 911 when she saw the teenager and her daughter behind the house.

The girl was rescued about 35 minutes later. The 17-year-old was caught at a police checkpoint near a subdivision entrance.

"We were very, very fortunate to get on it right away," said O'Fallon police chief Roy Joachimstaler.

According to court documents, police found a list on the suspect's cellphone that outlined his plans for what he was going to do with the girl after he kidnapped her.

"Take her to a secondary location, explain everything to her, smother her, rape her dead body, clean up and then pose the body ... photograph her, dispose of her body, leave town," the documents said.

The list also said he planned to hide in a foreclosed home and steal money and cars to support himself.

Police said the suspect told them he had stalked the girl on several occasions.

The St. Louis Post-Dispatch reported he has been charged with child kidnapping, burglary and two counts of child abuse. His bail has been set at $1.5 million.
