Civil War enthusiasts will mark the 140th anniversary of a local battle between Union and Confederate forces with a ceremony at 3 p.m. April 26 at Shelter No. 1 at Capaha Park.
Cape Girardeau Mayor Jay Knudtson is expected to speak at the ceremony, along with local representatives of the Sons of Union Veterans, and the SUVCW's Department of Missouri commander, Don Palmer.
Historians record that Confederate troops under Brig. Gen. John S. Marmaduke crossed into Missouri from Arkansas in spring of 1863. Union forces under the command of Brig. Gen. John McNeil defended Cape Girardeau, making use of earthen fortifications. Confederate troops attacked and were repulsed in the April 26, 1863 battle which lasted approximately four hours.
