James Wilson Lewis, 78, of Cape Girardeau died Saturday, July 26, 1997, at the Missouri Veterans Home in Cape Girardeau.

He was born Sept. 23, 1918, in Marion, Ill., the son of Phillip and Ethel Putnam Lewis.

He first married Amanda "Dixie" English. She preceded him in death. He married Laura Crews in 1966 in Cape Girardeau. She survives.

Lewis was a member of St. Andrew Lutheran Church. He was also a member of VFW Post 3838 in Cape Girardeau, the American Legion Post in Cape Girardeau and the U.S. Army Horse Cavalry Association. He earned the rank of lieutenant colonel in the U.S. Army and received a Special Order of Military Merit from the government of Brazil and a Special Letter of Commendation from the General Headquarters of the Army of the Republic of China. After retiring from the U.S. Army, he worked for New York Life Insurance and several car dealerships in the area.

He is survived by two sons, Randall English Lewis of Carterville, Ill., and Michael James Lewis of Marion; a daughter, Susan Denton of Benton, Ill.; a stepdaughter, Kay Crews Fullerton of Dallas, Texas; a brother, William Lewis of Canon City, Colo.; two sisters, Margaret Cooksey of Marion and Betty Hoover of Tucson, Ariz.; six grandchildren; and two great-grandchildren.

Funeral service will be Tuesday at 10 a.m. at Ford and Sons Mount Auburn Chapel, with the Rev. Paul Short officiating. Burial will be at Apple Creek Cemetery at Pocahontas, with VFW graveside rites.

Visitation will be Monday evening from 5 to 8 at the funeral home.
