For the first time in Oak Ridge history, the high school gymnasium has a new hardwood floor. The athletes and coaches are excited about the new addition to the facilities.
The original gym floor was tile. In 1983, a carpet floor was installed to replace the tile. The hardwood floor was installed in July 1995. Injuries and the cost of maintenance were the deciding factors to install the floor.
The installation of the hardwood floor was included in the original construction plans for the school. But the actual building costs were higher than the estimated costs so the hardwood floor purchase became questionable. So the school board opted to do a lease purchase for the floor.
The floor was then installed at a cost of $30,850. The school paid the initial $5,850, leaving a balance of $25,000. The Oak Ridge Booster Club's goal is to retire that debt by March 1, 1996.
The new 5,000 square-foot gym will be sold by the square foot. Donations are being accepted. All donations will be recognized with the names of the sponsors engraved on a plaque that will be displayed in a prominent place at the school.
