CAPE GIRARDEAU - The honor society of nursing, Sigma Theta Tau International, has recognized a tool designed by Southeast Missouri Hospital personnel to introduce children to cardiac risk factors and a heart-healthy lifestyle.

Called "You and Your Heart," the tool consists of an audio cassette and educational coloring book. Children listen to the tape and follow along with the book.

The tool has been used in presentations to schools, day care centers, scout troops, church groups, and health fairs, Southeast Hospital said.

Accepting the 1991 Region Two Media Award for Excellence in Nursing Journalism on behalf of Southeast was Linda Heitman, medical-surgical clinical nurse specialist. The presentation was made recently at Sigma Theta Tau International's Region Two Assembly in St. Louis.

The award cites the creators of "You and Your Heart" the hospital, Heitman, Connie Schaefer, RN-C, and Southeast's Marketing and Communications Department.

The purpose of the Sigma Theta Tau International award is to enhance the public's understanding of nursing and nursing knowledge.
