JEFFERSON CITY -- Now is the time to start planning for tree planting.

Bruce Palmer, forestry information specialist for the Missouri Department of Conservation (MDC), says there still is time to develop a planting plan before spring, which is the best time for planting trees. Furthermore, he said, the National Arbor Day Foundation has an excellent new publication to help landowners make the most of their tree planting efforts.

The publication is a 32-page booklet titled "Conservation Trees for Your Farm, Family and Future." It includes color photos and detailed illustrations showing how to plant and care trees. Topics discussed include stream cover strips, trees for livestock, trees for wildlife, field windbreaks, farmstead windbreaks, living snow fences, tree plantations, woodlot management, specialty crops and trees for recreation.

The booklet is a cooperative effort by the National Arbor Day Foundation, the National Association of Conservation Districts, the National Association of State Foresters and the U.S. Department of Agriculture.
