CAPE GIRARDEAU - The Re-Emergents group at Southeast Missouri State University is proceeding with its plans to establish a scholarship for non-traditional students.
The group for non-traditional students began its fund drive in January, and hopes to raise $10,000 in the next four to five years, according to Cliff Bangert, vice president of the group. That amount would provide initial funding for a partial scholarship for a non-traditional student taking part-time hours or a full scholarship to pay tuition for a full-time student, he said.
Earlier this month, the group held its first fund raiser. The drawing raised $625.
The following winners were recently announced: Tyrone McClinton of Cape, 50 gallons of gas; Frankie Cochran of Jackson, 20 gallons of gas; Tina Baker of Cape, 15 gallons of gas; Linda Kelley of Cape, 10 gallons of gas; and one case of anti-freeze each to Ron Davis of Chaffee, Betty Meeham of Jackson, Shara Marler of Cape, Dr. George Suggs of Cape, and Dr. Hamner Hill of Cape.
"This was a first effort, and we felt good about it," said Bangert. "We're looking at contacting some chambers of commerce and businesses in Southeast Missouri for donations. We also are planning some more drawings each semester."
Bangert said that few scholarships are geared to non-traditional students. But as the university targets more non-traditional students, the need for scholarships will continue to grow, he said.
Non-traditional students include those who are married, over 25 years of age, veterans, working full time, or who have a G.E.D. certificate.
Those wishing more information about the scholarship drive or the organization can contact Bangert at 339-3302 or Pam McCarron, the president, at 335-4910.
