A century-old barn caught on fire just after 8 a.m. Monday at 2102 County Road 318, drawing crews from Gordonville, Cape Girardeau and Millersville. The barn was destroyed.

Although the cause of the fire is undetermined, it may be electrical, said Gordonville fire chief Randy Morris Jr. The owner, Bob Klaproth, told Morris because the barn was so old, there were often power outages. A generator would kick on if the power went out, he said.

Klaproth's wife, Opal, said there was one pregnant cow in the barn who died as a result of the fire.

"We didn't want to risk anyone going in," she said.

Crews began to leave the scene at about 9:30 a.m.
