The Scott City Fire Department responded to a structure fire at 2:09 p.m. Wednesday at a two-story home at 701 W. Chestnut St. Fire chief Jay Cassout said the fire was fully involved when firefighters arrived with smoke and flames visible in the home's front room. Firefighters were able to get the blaze under control by 3 p.m., but Cassout said the home's interior was destroyed. No one was home at the time. The Cape Girardeau Fire Department provided mutual aid.

Cassout said he believes the fire originated at the home's wood stove, but isn't sure if the fire came from the stove itself or its flue.
