The Cape Girardeau Fire Department said the fire damage was limited to a bedroom in one of the apartments, with heat, smoke and water damage throughout the rest of the building.

The fire appears to have started around the electrical baseboard heater in the bedroom.

Two of the families from the building were placed in a local motel for the night by the Salvation Army.

Damage was estimated at $10,000.
