Cape Girardeau firefighters responded to an apartment fire Tuesday on Fountain Street. Firefighter Matt Mittrucker said the fire was confined to a basement apartment. No injuries were reported, he said. "The apartment above it was vacant," he said. Crews responded to 513 N. Fountain St. at about 5:30 p.m. Mittrucker said firefighters were on the scene for about an hour and a half. The fire was ruled accidental and caused between $10,000 and $15,000 in damage, he said. Mittrucker said about half the 600-square-foot basement was gutted. The rest of the basement suffered smoke and water damage, he said.
