CAIRO, Ill. -- No one was injured when fire destroyed a Cairo home Tuesday afternoon. Firefighters responded about 3:45 p.m. to a house fire at 427 Union St., said fire chief John Meyer. Flames and smoke were pouring from the single-story structure when firefighters arrived, Meyer said. An elderly woman who lived in the home escaped the blaze, he said. Twelve firefighters responded to the scene and remained until about 5:30 p.m., Meyer said. The American Red Cross was on the scene Wednesday. The cause of the fire remained under investigation Wednesday, Meyer said.
